Smart Trash Bin Automation System Based on Internet Of Things
This device is designed to monitor the capacity of a trash bin automatically, improving waste management efficiency with an Internet of Things (IoT) alert system. It uses an ultrasonic sensor to detect the bin's fill level. When the bin is full, automatic notifications are sent through a smartphone app, along with a local alarm. The system monitors trash bin capacity data in real-time via Wi-Fi, helping to organize waste management more efficiently.
In Development

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
- Detect the trash bin fill level in real-time.
- Send notifications directly to cleaning staff via IoT app (Blynk/Telegram).
- Integrate a local alarm system to warn when the bin is full.
- Provide real-time trash bin capacity monitoring using Wi-Fi connectivity.

DESIGN PROCESS
- Problem discovery: This process involves identifying the issue of inefficient waste management in public areas.
- Research and understanding the problem: Once the problem is identified, research is conducted on automatic waste management solutions.
- Wireframe and prototype creation: Develop the concept of an automated trash bin using an ultrasonic sensor and design the notification flow.
- High-fidelity design iteration: Transform sketches and wireframes into the final design ready for hardware and software integration.
- Review and further iteration: The design is reviewed by the engineering team to ensure feasibility and alignment with technical requirements.
- Hardware development: Once the design is approved, the device hardware is developed and integrated with the ultrasonic sensor.
- Testing and QA: Testing is conducted to ensure the device can detect when the trash bin is full and send notifications effectively.
CHALLENGES
- Adjusting the device design to fit various trash bin locations.
- Ensuring connectivity and reliability of the IoT notification system in areas with limited Wi-Fi coverage.

LESSONS LEARNED
- Learning user behavior in waste management in public areas.
- Using A/B testing to determine the optimal threshold for bin full alerts.
- Gaining new experience in developing IoT systems that support efficiency and cleanliness in public spaces.
